I’ve seen many ways- paint, stain… sanded/non sanded-
which is the best way to get the whitewash antiqued look?
I still want some natural wood to show through.

if the antique has any value, at all, painting it will diminish that value. that being said, if you still want to try it, get some pickling stain. it will give the wood a bleached-out or white-washed appearance, and still allow the grain to be prominent.

Whitewashing is very easy. Go to a paint store and buy a small (1 quart) of any color paint you may want to use. It must be oil based paint, but the grade (quality) of the paint is not reall of consequence. Also pick up a gallon of mineral spirits. Pour some of the paint into a container, and dilute it with the mineral spirits until it is slightly thicker than the consistence of water.

Test the whitewash in a small area, out of view to get an idea of whether or not it is what you are looking for. If so, then paint away.

Also, the beauty of white wash is, if your wash is too thin, you can apply a second coat to intensify the effect. You really must use oil paint for this application, as water based paints won’t yield the same results.

This method is cheaper than buying specialized stain, and will go much further.

Best way is to first strip off the old finish. Then a light sanding with 120-150 grit sandpaper just to rough-up the surface a little. Then get yourself some white latex paint. Thin it with about 10% water. Apply with a brush and wipe off excess right away, leaving enough to get the look you want. Let dry overnight and then apply 2 coats of a good quality polyurethane. I’ve used this method many times with excellent results! Hope this helps you!!

Hello! I would like to repaint the interior of my apartment, but it seems like the old tenant used what I think is “whitewash”. It rubs off easily, and is kind of powdery.

I was thinking I could just use an oil based paint over it, but after some research it seems that I may need a primer as well. Any ideas?

If it is whitewash it may well have lime in it which will burn though most paints so you need to remove as much as possible and would recommend you use a mask whilst doing so.Then talk to someone at your local paint store for a recommended primer/sealer. Dilute pva adhesive may do it but its best to check with an expert and you might take some of this powder with you as it may help.

You are not gonna like what I am about to tell you
He either did use whitewash or he used latex(that was on sale because it got frozen that is why it is on sale but they(the stores) will never admit to that). Basically garbage now. Good for painting the ground because it will flake off the walls. Whitewash was used mainly outside. If it has been done in the 60′s on, more likely latex.
Get some sandpaper about 100-120c grit(Garnet or orange paper). Split the big sheet in half and then fold into thirds. You now have a palm sized piece of sandpaper which is easy to work with and instead of 1 single surface you now have 6.
Now with the paper in your palm sand the wall like you were washing windows with a rag.. Lots of powder is gonna come down so you may want to have a mask on.
Broom off the sanding dust
Use Alkyd primer or alkyd oil primer(same thing) Do whole room in primer let dry a day or more,then sand walls lightly so feel like velvet. Ready for next coat which can be oil or latex.

That’s not whitewash. That is just plain old flat sheen paint. Wash the walls, and paint with latex. No primer needed.

What you have is the main reason flat should NEVER be used on walls.
