I’ve painted some designs on a table and I’d like to protect it. I have a fast-drying oil based polyurethane. I used enamel paint and latex paint for the table. Will the polyurethane be safe to use over this? How long should I wait before applying it? And also, what would be the best brush/roller to use for the smoothest finish? Thanks!

Let the paint dry for at least 48 hrs. Then take a mix of 30-70 (30% thinner and 70%poly) and coat it. Wait about 8 hrs. and sand this with 400 to 600 wet or dry sandpaper. just enough and light enough to take out any dust that may have gotten on the table. Then wipe clean and apply 100% poly lightly, and re sand and re-apply one more coat of poly. When this drys, use something like min wax finishing wax on the surface and you will be done. It takes time but is well worth it. Good Luck (you can also try a 40-60 mix, but this may start to remove the paint)

you shouldn’t use oil over latex. Wait 24 hours and then use a water base poly with a high gloss finish. Its best to apply with a sprayer if one is available.
