I bought some items from Garage Sales. I want to re-paint a wooden bench chest, and a bookshelf. They already have paint (not stained) and I want to paint them both dark brown. Is there a special type of paint I need?? Do I need to prime? I want a nice glossy-new look…….. but not a stain. I also want to stencil on it as well. Thanks for your help. If you know any project links that might help me with some idea, please let me know.

The proper way is to strip the old paint, prime it and then paint. You might need two coats. For the smoothest finish, you’ll want to spray paint.

you could sand it down first then put a layer of protector and then paint and then finish with varnish, they more varnish you use the longer the glossy effect will last, you could ask for the best type in your local DIY store or online, twenga does stuff like that, youl find a rnage there.

First of all, scuff it with 100 grit sandpaper to smooth it and give the primer some tooth. Next, use a quality primer, such as Benjamin Moore Fresh Start. Have the primer tinted to help with coverage on the finish paint. Next apply 2 coats of semi gloss enamel in the color you like, allowing each to dry and sanding lightly between coats. It should look great when you are done. Hope this helps.

You need to get a good quality primer such as KILZ. Do two coats on all surfaces that you wish to have painted.
Allow to fully dry.
Then get a high gloss paint in the desired color of brown and also do two coats of paint on furniture.
LET IT DRY for quite awhile probably 48 hours depending on the humidity in your area.
Remember to change out the knobs on the dressers to update the look. Either buy new ones or find some used ones that you like.
For the stenciling….
You can go a few different ways.
* If you are artistic you could free hand them onto the dresser by painting it yourself… risky business doing this. If you mess up you may have to repaint the whole dresser.
* You could buy sticker stencils and apply those to the front of the drawers. Then… take decoupage glue and apply an even coat over the front of the dresser.
Allow to dry.
This will dry clear and look very nice.
*You could find paper stencils that you really like. Apply decoupage glue to the drawer front and apply the paper stencil. Then allow to dry.
Next, apply two coats of decoupage glue to the drawer facing over the stencil to lock the stencil onto the drawer front ….forever.

You only need to strip the old paint off if it is not soundly attached; otherwise abrade first and then just use a good quality undercoat and topcoat, the same as you would use for the rest of the wood in your house.
You do not prime previously painted surfaces. Primer is for bare and a few problem surfaces.

Your looking for pickled satin.
1. Take some white oil base paint and put in a work pot 1 gallon can 1/4 high
2. Than add some thinner little at a time and sample till you get the white wash you are looking for and wipe off lightly with wood grain at the paint supply store latex gloves are cheap 50 cents to .00 a pair.
Put on with a throw away brush if your project is not big if you dont complete put brush in water to keep from getting hard till you get back started again.
