Question–: Can you paint Ikea furniture, without ruining it?
I have a dresser and chest from Ikea that are the light birch and I want to know how and if I can paint them a darker color? Will the furniture hold up to light sanding? What kind of paint would I use? Wood? Wall? I know its not high quality stuff, and I’ve had it for awhile but I just wanted to try a revamp and make sure it would look decent. Any suggestions?

It depends on whether they are wood or just a wood finish (wood effect). If it is wood it will probably be veneered so a light sand followed by a good undercoat then a gloss paint should be ok. Don’t sand too hard or you’ll damage the veneer. If it’s a wood finish or wood effect then you need to find out exactly what it’s made of and may need to buy a specialist primer. Take a small drawer to a good company, such as Travis Perkins, and ask their advice on which product to use.

I’ve used a high quality spray paint and had luck. Did it 3 years ago and everything still looks great. Didn’t need to sand it or anything.

Which brand to use would depend on what color and finish you want.
Also, if you choose to go that route, make sure your technique is good or you will wind up with runny paint (practice on an old box or something).

Yes, you can.

But you probably won’t like the results.

The prepwork – sanding, filling holes, cleaning off old finish, dirt, grease, etc – is what makes the difference between a great looking piece of work and something that looks like it was done in a garage while waiting for the toaster to pop up. If you want it to look good, Fill in any dings, dents, holes, etc. Replace any missing trim. Update any hardware – knobs, pulls, glides, and so forth. Spend some time sanding it, cleaning off any grease or oil, removing hardware that you don’t want paint on, etc. Get a clean brush and brush off all the sanding dust. Get a tack cloth and wipe it down to make sure you got it all. Move it to a place with little or no dust, and no breeze to paint it. A garage or driveway is not a good place if the wind will blow dust all over it.

If you don’t want to do all of that, or need to, at least lightly sand it with a fine grit sandpaper. This will remove any glaze on the old paint, and give it a rough surface that will allow the new paint to grip it much better.

You can do it without sanding but it will not last very long. Sanding something that has already been painted is not just to get out any imperfections, it is to form a key for the new paint to adhere to. If you just paint over the existing stuff it will chip very easily but also once it is chipped it will peel. It comes off in small sheets and leaves ragged edges that are then almost impossible to sand down.
An alternative is to sugar soap it. This has the same effect as getting rid of the surface underneath and gives you a sound base on which to apply the new paint. If you are going to do it I suggest you use a satinwood finish oil based paint which will last longer than gloss and will look better. Don’t even consider using emulsion, it won’t last five minutes.

first answer was correct that its the difference between an ok and a good job.
you do not have to sand like mad just lightly scratching the surface gives your coat of paint something to adhere to. just lightly rub all over with a fine sand paper.
