Polyurethane|how to polyurethane wood acrylic veneer table?
Posted 7 August 2011 by admin Question–: how to polyurethane wood acrylic veneer table?
I have an Ikea wood table with an ash acrylic-based veneer. I want to polyurethane it to protect it from spills, scratches, & other wear & tear. Has anyone done it? I’d like some tips on how, whether to use acrylic-based semigloss, and whether to spray, or paint with a bristle brush or foam brush. Do I have to sand first?
The following is the answer: (Hint: The answer is not necessarily.)

The existing finish should be okay for this but if you insist I would recommend lightly sanding it then using a water-based poly. Spraying is messy and requires good ventilation but will likely give you a smoother finish. Just be sure that it is real wood as some Ikea stuff is a somewhat convincing fake. If you sand a fake finish it will ruin it.

Polyurethane–: How to remove fume from newly painted polyurethane on wooden floor?
I recently painted the wooden floor with polyurethane. It gave off a strong smell and fume. When I cook, with opened flame, the smell got stronger. I opened all windows to aired out but the weather is too cold. How can I remove this fume in the house ?

since it is cold outside it is probably a bit cold on your floor as well,l and the poly U is sometimes very slow totally drying. I would put any kind of fans you have on the floor and direct them down, turn up your heat a bit, and crack a window for air escape. Problem should resolve as the poly U dries totally. Do not put wax or anything else on it, you will trap the moisture and either force it down into the floor or it will take longer to totally dry.
