What kind of furniture?

You should use stain and varnish or varethane. varethane comes in a spray can and is a tough clear coating that will protect your wood furniture after you have stained it.
For old furniture, you should find some gel stain that matches the original and touch up the furniture piece before you spray it with varethane.
