I’m getting ready to finish an old outdoor glider/bench. The wood is VERY dry. Should I rub this down with some kind of furniture oil before trying to stain it? The wood is so dry it is starting to crack a little in some places, and the surfaces are kind of textured.

No, anything like oil would stop the stain soaking in.

In fact, you should lightly sandpaper along the grain to
remove oily finger marks, as they, too, will stop the stain
soaking in and leave patches.

I agree DO not put oil before you stain it. Sand it down fill in the cracks if need be. Because it is and outdoor furniture it will dry and crack.

No, you might want to sand first, though, and check all joints, they might need reglueing.

Order of task.
1. Sand and fill/repair as necessary
2. Stain
3. Oil or apply other protective coat

Answer by split dog
Depends on the stain.
As mentioned ,would not use an oil.
An exterior stain ( transparent or opaque ) can go over something like Woodlife after it is completely dry.
Might be easier to use a tinted deck stain like CWF for color & protection.

Answer by Handy but Perplexed
I would treat the furniture with a wood conditioner prior to staining. The wood conditioner penetrates the wood and helps the wood accept the stain evenly. This will only work with oil based stains.

Q&A–: What is the best way to polish wood furniture?
I’ve used Pledge and some other brands of wood cleaner. After a day or so my wood furniture always looks like there are slick spots. Some areas look dry and others look like there is a concentration of oil sitting on top. I always make sure to use two different cloths while polishing, one to apply the polish, one to buff the furniture clean. What am I doing wrong or should I use a better polish?

The following is the answer: (Hint: The answer is not necessarily.)

Answer by Norm DePlume
I do not like Pledge. It contains silicone oil that once you have it, you never get rid of it. It causes severe problems (fish-eye) for repair and refinishing. Over time, it builds up because it is inert and does not evaporate away. It can also grab onto soil and keep it in the oil. I have some silicone removal cloths and they can come up black in just a square foot or so of chronically Pledge-cleaned furniture.

A better polish is an emulsion polish like Guardsman, OZ, or Endust. These will be milky white.

I prefer plain old lemon oil myself. I have Rosewood and Teakwood furniture that I bought in Japan 35 years ago and have never used anything but lemon oil on it. It still looks as good as new.
