I’ve researched the methods for painting wooden bookcases and learned about sanding between coats and using latex floor paint (instead of wall paint) for durability. However, my husband still thinks we need to use a professional (or rent a paint sprayer, which I’m trying to avoid) because he doesn’t want to see “brush strokes” on the finished product. I’ve completed a few shelves to test it out, but the brush strokes are still visible… How do I get a nice smooth finish without visible brush strokes when painting wood furniture/shelves?

If you have a harbor freight store nearby buy one of these and plan to throw out after a few handful of heavy uses. nttp://www.harborfreight.com/20-oz-high-volume-low-pressure-gravity-feed-spray-gun-47016.html

Paint is self leveling. If you water down the paint and put on another layer it will fill in some of the paint lines. The stiffer the paint, the more paint lines you will have. The runnier the paint the more it will even out over time.

Use a roller and foam brushes.

Add a flow extender to your paint if possible. Available at your local paint or hardware store. This reduces the surface tension of the paint and helps it distribute more evenly, smoothing out visible brush strokes.Use a professional grade paintbrush matched to the type of paint you’re using. Consider a china bristle brush for oil-based paint and a polyester brush for latex-based paint. A high-quality paintbrush will yield a better result than an inexpensive or disposable brush.Apply the paint with the wood grain, using long, smooth strokes, working on one section at a time. As soon as the surface is painted, knock the remaining paint off the brush into the paint can or tray. Immediately tip off the painted section by holding the brush at a low angle and lightly running the bristles over the painted surface, evening out visible brush marks. Leave the surface undisturbed until it is completely dry. Once the paint begins to dry, any further brushwork will leave visible marks.

Thin coats lightly sanded between coats. Thick coats are the number one reason brush strokes show. Thin coats require a very light sanding only. Thick coats are a sign of an amature, usually on the belief that self leveling will smooth it out. if you go to a high end furniture store and look, all the finishes are very thin and turnings and carvings are not buried under globs of finish. The between sanding is very light as you will not have large brush strokes to sand down. And no drips icon smile paint for wooden furniture|painting bookcases without noticeable brush marks?

well since most school require there students to have so many hours of community service why not check and see if you can combine the two together and seek the assistance of some senior in a nursing home to help with the project!!! good luck!!!

A bit more info would be helpful. Senior in High School? What are your teacher’s guidelines and expectations of your project?
Painting furniture seems a bit simplistic to me.
As far as craft projects are concerned, the ideas are endless.
Flower arranging, constructing basic wooden flower boxes, embellishing picture frames with special pics inside……

My grandson did his on the homeless..he went to City Team Ministries and Catholic Social Service, they both were very helpful as far as getting him a mentor. Thankfully he didn’t tell me he was visiting homeless camps, he put his presentation on power point and it was very effective..You could do flower arranging, a local florist could be your mentor. A quilter would be happy to help. If a Ceramic shop is around that would be interesting. Maybe a jeweler would be willing to help you design a ring, bracelet or pendent to sell in their shop. Good luck and have fun doing whatever you choose to do. Start as soon as possible so you will not be rushed to finish it.
