Yes, but you have to make sure that all the saw dust is cleaned off the wood first. A tack rag, you can buy them at Lowe’s, will clean off the saw dust after you’re done sanding.
You will need to make several light coat passes in order to get the color to come out right. Don’t forget to mask off any parts you don’t want painted.

paint for wood–: What is a good gentle way to remove old paint / wood stain from a piece of furniture?
We bought an antique high chair…not for collecting but for our baby to be. Trouble is it has a very creepy clown on it and some sort of wood stain that is in bad shape.
Is there something gentle that will remove both the paint & the stain but not hard the wood?
I meant not HARM the wood.

A good remover is a product called Goof Off. Apply a light coating, dab or rub lightly it should start working soon. Go for one layer at a time. Once down to wood, oil the wood and apply wax. Another technique is to use a piece of glass and pull it at angle against the paint to be removed. Any glass will do but lab specimen glass is strong and easy to work with.
