after you have sanded, take a plain candle and rub the edges and details with it. this will keep the paint from adhering well on those areas. then paint with black semi-gloss paint; you may need two coats. take fine grit sandpaper and lightly distress the edges and details where you’ve applied the wax. this will let the bare wood show through a bit.

After sanding, paint unit black, then sand off areas that would normally wear off. edges, corners, around pulls and knobs, a little off the top surfaces where items would wear it off, then coat it with a flat protectant to protect the raw wood areas.
