I tried it once and it was hard work! In the end i used waterbased paint , diluted with water and applied it like a wash.
I painted my old pine bed setting, to give it a shabby chic french farmyard look…it looks perfect! im so proud.
But milk paint is a chore.

Milk paint was the common paint over a century ago. It is super durable and has very little odor. It is rather expensive, and as the earlier poster mentioned it is a bit more difficult to work although it does get a bit easier as you go.

Oddly enough, you might want to check out nttp://www.milkpaint.com

I have used it on some historic restoration projects. I probably would use a more modern product unless there was a real reason that milk paint was required.

I don’t know that it is more expensive, really. Most of them are powder that you mix with water and you use them very thin, it’s kind of like painting with milk powder in water. It has no odor to speak of, because it’s basically milk and mineral pigment. I wouldn’t use it outdoors in a damp climate like where I live but it is great for furniture or interior walls. It sort of soaks into wood, and it definitely takes a second coat to get complete coverage but one coat will give that weathered antiquey look. It has no sheen whatsoever, and if you want a washable surface you pretty much have to varnish it after.

I’m looking for a non-toxic paint to paint my walls at home. I’ve found something called Milk Paint but I’m not sure how well it applies. If you’ve tried, it please let me know how well it applied and if it applies similar to regular paint. I don’t mind a faux finished look – in fact, I wanted to do at least some of my walls with a sponge look or something like that. Any info is appreciated. Thanks.

I’ve used ICI/Glidden Lifemaster 2000 paint to do an entire house, and it rocks. You get a very watercolor-like look from it – much more lively than a standard latex. Works just like standard paint as far as application, cleanup, storage, etc. Color range is great.

It is not a casein (milk-base) paint, but a modified latex formulation. It contains *no* VOCs. It has a faint vinegarish smell while wet; we didn’t have any trouble with it at all. I can’t recommend it highly enough. If I had to paint again, it’s definitely what I’d use.
