Recently I wanted to re-do my kitchen so I painted the cabinets and the walls. It looks okay, but the cabinets turned out more pink than maroon (like I wanted), and the walls are extremely more yellow (like the sun). I wanted more of a maroon, but not too dark, and the yellow was supposed to be slightly more pale than it is. Any suggestions with decorating so I don’t have to repaint so soon?

I will be painting again this winter I suppose, but for now I need to “tone it down” a little. Thanks to all!

Use allot of white accents to not just tone it down but to sell it or tie it together. Add some green plants and give it an island type theme

i know u stated u didn’t want to paint again, but i would add white paint same sheen to the paint then mix it w/ glaze ( 3parts glaze to 1 part paint) then either do a brush or wash or even a sponging OVER the yellow walls. IT def. will tone it down.

As far as the cabinets, u can do the same thing but add either brown or black or even a dark red/maroon paint to the paint u did the cabinets with. Get a sample of 2oz bttls at craft store then try in some paint… then get the color u want… then mix w/ glaze & do the same thing but this time… brush it on & gently wipe it off. It should tone down that pink & give u closer to a darkr red. The glaze will b less paint to add to the walls or cabinets esp the cabinets for less build up.

Depending on how much wall space you have, you could perhaps buy a quart of a paler yellow. (remember that it will dry at least a shade darker then you expect). Get a really pale color and kinda slap it on – not trying to cover every spot. In the mean time cut open a garbage – bag so you have one sheet of plastic. Paint a section and stick the garbage bag to it, press down, then peel the bag off. Then take the bag to another section and stick it to the wall, press down and remove it. (it should leave behind enough paint to get the same effect as the other spot) This is so simple and so fast. It will definitely lighten the walls…making you a lot more comfortable.

As for the cabinets….buy a quart of semi-gloss black paint. Dip the very tip of a paint brush in the can and paint up and down the cabinets. Be sure you do this in a thin coat, so you get a sorta wood grain effect.

Hey, maybe you won’t have to repaint after all!

As long as the paint is oil base, any finish is acceptable. Like latex enamel. You are able to wipe off grease without ruining the paint finish.

semi-gloss (unless your walls are perfect and you like shiny walls), flats and mattes, don’t have the wipe-ability desired for kitchens

I’ve used satin finish in all my rooms- including the kitchen- and I have 3 young boys. I don’t think oil based paint is necessary.
