Q&A–: What kind of exterior house paint do you recommend?
My mom is going to paint her house, and she was thinking about using Wal-Mart’s colorplace. Is this good paint? If not, can you explain why? What brand of paint would you recommend for good price and will still do a good paint job?

A couple of things must be known to answer your question:
1st, What is the house painted with now? Is it a latex or an oil base paint?,,If it’s latex, than any latex paint can be painted over it.
If it’s oil based, than there’s more to it. Oil based paints get hard over the years and getting new paint (either new oil based or latex) to stick may be a problem.

To get the latex paint to stick to oil based paint, you must break the hard surface of the oil based paint. To do that, you must sand that surface. That’ll take alot of work.

To get oil based paint to stick to the old oil based paint, there are 2 things you can do.
1 is to sand the surface and the other is to add a softening agent to the paint your putting on.The softening agent is put directly into the paint your putting on. A good paint store will know of this softenting agent- I’ve used something called “Peso” (pronounced Pa-so-like the Mexican penny)

As to where you buy the paint, Remember, Wall-Mart sells the cheapest products they can and I’ll bet the people in their paint dept. don’t know much about painting. I would go to Loew’s, at least there, if there’s a problem, they’ll stand behind their products and the people in the paint dept. didn’t just graduate from 8th grade. If you live in an area that has a Menards, DON’T BUY FROM THEM, THEY DON’T STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCTS no matter what the problem is.

WalMart is rated one of the best paints on the market.I just used it inside and it is fantastic.
Use like paints Acrylic or Oil based.
I’d say yes! use Walmart.

house paint–: How long does it take to paint a house?
Or perhaps my question is “am I being jerked around?” I hired a painting company and the crew manager said they would come out and powerwash on a friday and then start to paint on a Monday (Jul 23). No one showed up so he said Wed, then Thurs, then Fri. Finally, after complaining, someone comes out to powerwash on Jul 29. Painters come Monday and work thru Thurs. The painters on his crew quit and it’s now Aug 6 and my house is partially painted. (Of course, he says they are coming out tomorrow or the next day). Is this a typical housepainting experience? I’ve never had a house painted before so I have no idea. The contract only indicates the job to be completed in the summer, but I find the drawing out the dates like that to be not very professional. It’s a national company by the way that hires college kids.

Some houses it takes longer than others. Some painters are slower than others. To be honest if you didn’t have a pro. do it you might be in trouble.

I’m a painting contractor and no this is not normal business practices. Most good contractors show up when they say they will ( weather permitting. the weather can push the start time back. also the weather can affect the start date after the pressure washing. You normally need at least 2 business days to let things thoroughly dry). If your contract does not have a specific start and finish date, then you might be at their will no matter how much you approve or disapprove of their business tactics. If you haven’t paid in full, you could try to negoiate with them to finish quickly, or drop them and hire somone else to finish the work. Did you get references?

The man next door to my mom painted his own medium sized house himself in like 2 days (after powerwashing of course!) Talk about motivation! That sounds a lot like they’re messing you over
