The best color to paint your house is a:

a) dark color like brown

b) light color like white

c) The color you paint your house is purely a question of artistic taste.
The answer is: b. There are many reasons: 1) White reflects best and keeps your house cool during the day. 2) White radiates least and so keeps your house warm at night. 3) White lasts longest because it reflects rather than absorbs light and absorbed light destroys paint — and the wood under it. Compare the paint on the north and south sides of your house if you doubt this. 4) If there is only a small space between your house and the neighbors’ house so little light gets into your side windows, then painting your house and the neighbors’ house white will reflect more light into the space between houses and into your windows and you can save on electric lights. Painting the inside of your house white also saves electric lighting. Don’t forget to paint your roof white, or aluminum. Now you know why the astronaughts wore white when they walked on the moon.

Up to you. Depends on location and how much sun it gets.

A lighter color will reflect more heat, so it you get a lot of direct sun and are in a southerly climate, then this is best.

A darker color will absorb heat from the sun, so for a cold northern climate, this may be best.

However, I’d love to see a calculation of the actual difference between, as you suggest, brown and white.

I do know that when I recently replaced the roof on a house in NH, I used a light color for these reasons. Roof/tile color is probably more important than the walls, as it gets more sun.

Like most things in life, it depends…

If you live in colder climates, darker colors can be beneficial because the darker colors will absorb more solar radiation. If you live in a hotter climate lighter colors can be beneficial because they will reflect more of the radiation. The color of the roof really make more of an impact than the color of the paint, but it can make a marginal difference (especially if you get a lot of low angle solar radiation). The question is which season will the color of your house make the biggest difference in your HVAC bills.

walk down the street on a sunny day, and lay your hand on top of each car.
in fact, i recommend this activity when you’re considering purchasing a car.
white cars are clearly cooler even than cars that are light colors, and much cooler than dark cars.
not long ago, we were on vacation in Florida.
and the rental was a black car.
i just don’t know what posses rental agencies to buy dark cars in Florida.
worse, i tried 3-4 times to trade it for a white car — with no luck at all.
boy was i stewed.

in addition, your white house not only will save you money running your air conditioner, but the paint will last longer, because you won’t have as much heat trying to decompose the paint.

Yes, do it every so often. The paint companies now have great suggestions for paint color combinations that would work well with the style of your house. Don’t do anything wacky if you have any idea of either selling your house, and/or if you would like to keep peace in the neighborhood.

A successful paint job completely depends on good preparation, which can take twice as long, or even more, as the final painting itself. Consult the paint store again for advice on how to prep.

What is your favorite color?? If its an intense color, stick with it just in a lighter hue. Other things to consider: neighbors’ homes colors, colors in the flower beds surrounding your home, mood you’d like to set for visitors, etc.
