Q&A–: What is the difference between a wax finish and a polyurethane finish?
I am sanding down my floors next weekend. and I want to know what the difference is between the two, because I want to use polyurethane but the thing is my house only has one way to the bathroom and to the front and back door, and I heard you can’t walk on the floor after you had used a polyurethane finish for 72 hours. And that isn’t a possibility for me. But i heard that you could use a wax finish, how long does that take to dry? and is it as good as the polyurethane finish.?

OK here is a difference. If you wax the floors, you can NEVER put any other coating on top. It is also soft meaning it wears away..
Poly is like a plastic coating. Used on Kitchen cabinets and your teacher’s wooden chair. It lasts 72 hours is full cure time It will dry faster than that but is not finished drying until 72 hours so walk in your socks.(not shoes).
I have had to rig up a planking system that did not touch the floor for that time but people could walk over it on the planks. “Arrr Billy ye got to walk the plank” It is better than putting poly on half the floor, because for me that meant a return visit and it will also show… So it requires a little creativity from you

There is a latex (water based) version of polyurethane made by RUST-OLEUM that dries very fast. You should be able to walk on the floors within an hour or so after the first coat. You will have to apply a second coat and wait an additional 2-3 hours before walking on them.

Wax finishes will wear faster and have to be redone sooner, The poly will last longer.
But the one main difference is that the wax won t be near as shiny looking as a poly coat. Urethane’s are done 99.9% of the time rather than the wax finish.

Hi. Long time no see, welcome, blog: how do you paint furniture or buy antique furniture paint.
Q&A–: How do I know if furniture has varnish or polyurethane on it now?
I have a dining room table I need to refinish, but I have no idea if it currently is finished with varnish or polyurethane. I want to be sure I use the appropriate stripper when I take off the current coating. It does have a few scuffs that look like paint, but they are small, and I am not sure they are paint. I got the table and chairs free, but have no background info on it.

Does varnish have some poly in it? If it does, then just use a varnish remover. (I’m not sure) that info is important for your question

Usually if it has something like that there will either be a dull shine or a high gloss shine in it depending on how old it is or what its been through. It doesnt matter what kind of stripper you use as long as is for removing the poly.

Stripper will take it all, varnish, stain, paint, and poly… no problem.
Look for a professional grade stripper. If you have never done it before, you need thick gloves, a scraper, sandpaper, and a bucket for the “gunk”.

Bethany pretty much summed it up.. but be sure to use the paint/varnish stripper in a well-ventilated area!
good luck

I re-finished and re-surfaced our hardwood floors. It was fun. And by fun, I mean backbreaking hard work. But it was worth it.
