Question–: what is the best polyurethane to use with large dogs?
we are installing hardwood floors and we have a boxer, german shepard and a black lab: as well as 3 kids. What is the best to use water or oil polyurethane and how many coats?
my husband and i are installing the floors. so there is no company to ask.

If you really want something that will standup to toenails, find a moisture cure urethane. I put Sherwin Williams Rexthane on my hard wood floor over 10 years ago and it has stood up to puppies and visits from their friends and relatives. It is hard to find especially in anything but ultra high gloss. You don’t want a water base or tung oil product. Nothing with a oil except maybe coconut. 2 package urethanes are good too, but require mixing. With a moisture cure urethane you can put the second coat on within hours of the first and move the furniture in the next day. Except for the horrible smell, it goes on like any other varnish. Use good ventilation.

Don’t take dumb looks or claims something else is as good except maybe a 2 part epoxy.

I refinished my hardwood floors last month in barefeet. They turned out great. Unforturnately, I got some MinWax polyurethane on my toe nails, causing an ugly yellow tinge. Is there a safe way to remore this? It is a strange predictament, I know. Thanks for your help.

You should have worn shoes. Just let them grow out until the polyurethe is all gone.

Laquer thinner usually works, as does Naptha (lighter fluid). Both are flammable so use care. Wash with water after to remove any chemical residue.

I’d suggest fine grain sand paper. something like 100 grit or more. that should take polyurethane off. I’d personally use my pocket knife or a utility knife. actually, i probably wouldn’t get polyurethane on my feet to begin with and if i did i wouldn’t really care.

Don’t cut yourself.
also, nail-polish-remover will probably work. rubbing alcohol will probably work. kerosene will probably work. paint thinner will probably work. mineral spirits will probably work. vodka will probably work…. but i like knives.

I re-finished and re-surfaced our hardwood floors. It was fun. And by fun, I mean backbreaking hard work. But it was worth it.
