a floor sander. Rent one.

Rather than just using a belt sander to remove the un -wanted polyurethane, which, with the best will in the world will prove very messy and dusty try the following. Your local DIY store will almost certainly stock a product specifically produced for the removal of varnish/ polyurethane. Don’t confuse this with paint removal products as they are not the same.I would suggest you use the said product to remove the majority of the polyurethane, followed by the sander in order to provide the prepared surface to accept your chosen finish.Any method you choose will be messy and dusty, so WEAR A MASK when tackling this project.

Unless you have experience with sanders, I recommend you use an orbital “pad” sander. It won’t turn on it’s side like a belt sander and gouge the floor making more work. It will get in the corners real good too. I rented one for a 150 yr. old house and it did a beautiful job, and the room was done in two days. Walking on it in three. Use a Good floor poly. If you use a stain, then poly, you’ll want to wait about 3 days between staining and poly application.

Poly is junk and breaks very easily, go Fiberglass.

Answer by zapp154
This can depend on your location….temperature plays with both. If it gets really cold where you are….I would go with the poly, it is better with cracking than the glass (in most cases). The fiberglass is more “stable” and is easier to fix though….and it’s heavier…Think it is really up to you….

as far as i know i think urethane is the better choice here had a fiberglass bodykit didn’t fit well at all and a pain to put on. urethane should be alot easier to put on and is more flexible than fiberglass. look at it this way if you’re going to do alot of daily driving with this car go urethane. if it’s a show car go fiberglass and as far as prices do some searching.fiberglass=cheaper!!! urethane=expensive, but looks alot better.
