Nitrocellulose|What clearcoat will adhere to shellac?
Posted 3 October 2011 by admin Nitrocellulose–: What clearcoat will adhere to shellac?
I’ve just put about 8 coats of shellac on a handmade table. I know that shellac protects well enough, but I’d like to put a few coats of clear on it to add some depth and shine.
However, on the can of shellac I used, it says I can’t use polyurethane on top of it. I also know that nitrocellulose is too soft for my purposes.
Are there any other lacquers or varnishes that I can use?

Shellac is all you need as far as protection-rub some fine steel wool over it for depth-0000 steel wool wont scratch 8 coats of shellac-only give it a buffed look
I find tung oil a great way to finish wood-it shines and protects and looks great-but I wouldn’t use it over shellac-just a thought for next time…..

The following are not relevant to the content of some Nitrocellulose, also not about the contents of the outdoor shop,But ,a little bird told me, it is funny:A candle lights others and consumes itself.Friendship is love without his wings. (George Gordon Byron, Bdritish poet)Work makes the workman..Q&A–: What can I put above the shellac coating as a fixture?
I used shellac to paint a plaster bust.
The first coat was pure shellac, the second was shellac mixed with ground colors.and now when I touch it, I wipe the paint off it. Can I put a coat of Nitrocellulose lacquer above?
Any other suggestions are welcome.
tnx

Shellac is made from the backs of insects and disolved in alchol. That is shellac.
Shellac is a sealer, not a finisher product.
Steel wool down the entire bust statue, then mix the ground colors in ordinary clear varnish or polyurethane. That will bond permanently and give you a protective finish unlike shellac.
Lacquer is for a hard surface, non porous and stable. That bust is from Plaster, which is unstable material, subject to expansion a great deal due to moisture and temp changes.

don’t put lacquer on it, that will blister it and lift it entirely. try another coat of shellac
