Q&A–: What should I use to paint my desk?
I have this old desk that I want to paint to match my new furniture, but I have no idea what paint to use, namely because I don’t know what kind of material it is. There is this ‘paper’ covering the wood, to make it look like it is wood and it peels off. What is this called and what painting techniques should I use?

It sounds like laminate, or veneer. Which is either a thin layer of actual wood (veneer) or a layer of plastic made to look like wood (laminate). If it is really just paper follow the answer below (except I would say clean, sand, then primer, then paint, etc.)

Rip the paper off. Prime. Sand. Acrylic Latex Enamel. Clear Coat with water base Poly.
Not the best type of furniture to work with.
