I just moved into a new england home. It was in the process of foreclosure so of course, it needs some wall repair and paint. I have brown, earth tone type furniture, but I am an artist and not afraid of color. The only stipulations I have is that I am working with a dingy greenish/blueish carpet. Can’t take it out for another yea and a half. And please also keep in mind that yellow makes my husband nervous and I will not paint any room red or black.
Also, almost forgot to mention. The livingroom windows and baseboards are all the natural wood.
Color and technique are appreciated.

Do some fauz painting with two-toned colors.
You can do something of a light blue-green color on top of each other, or, do neutrals like light tans and creams on top of each other.
Also wide vertical stripes are cool with one color. You get one light color in high or semi-gloss and flat and alternate the two types to make stripes. The effect is awesome!

If you already have plans for the carpet to come out, I wouldn’t necessarily let it drive my decision for the wall color. Can you buy a neutral rug large enough to cover most of the carpet? Look around – there may be places like Fred’s or a Tuesday Morning in your area where you could pick up a large area rug without investing a fortune. Lowe’s and Home Depot can also cut an inexpensive, commercial carpet to your specification, and you could use that as a rug until the existing carpet is ready to come out.
As for the wallcolor itself, I am always partial to greens – especially where there is natural wood trim. Whether you use a muted sage green (mid-tone) or a deep rich forest green (if the room is large enough) I don’t think you could go wrong. And depending on the shade, this MIGHT work with the existing carpet, but again, I would endeavor to cover as much of that as possible until you can remove it.
Just to clarify, the greens I’m talking about have more olive tones in them – no yellow undertones. The effect is usually very sophisticated and pleasing.
As for technique, you might prefer some sort of faux finish, but I have always preferred walls with the color straight up, so I don’t really have a suggestion for technique. A neighbor of ours used several bold colors of yellow (yes, I know you don’t want that) and a coral color to faux paint her walls, but I think if you’re going for texture or technique you should use an array of neutral, soft colors like beige and cream. Our neighbor lives in a split foyer and used these colors with a ragging technique over a large area….she ended up with something that closely resembles a blood orange. (Not good)
Whatever you do, have fun. Since you are an artist and love color, I’m sure the end result will be beautiful. Most of all – trust your instincts.
Best wishes –

play around with the Sherwin Williams color visualizer to find colors that you like. It is the best paint visualizer on the web, imho. I like how their color palette is laid out, I like that you can search by color family & color name, the “painted” rooms look the most realistic, and it suggests coordinating color schemes. You can literally spend hours:

I think “pizazz peach” (# 6888) might be a great choice.
You can take a photo of your house & upload it to the makeover gallery on this website:

You can get color suggestions & for $ 5 they’ll photoshop them onto your room so that you can get an idea of what it will look like.
