Seating, Library and Learning Centre Space, UEL

A variety of seating is offered in this space. Soft high backed benches offer an element of privacy and sound proofing whilst café style tables and chairs with wheels offer the user flexibility. The room is fully flexible in its uses – for example quiet study, group working or meeting space. Block colour is used in the furniture of the room and carpeting is used adding warmth and sound proofing properties. Walls are painted in neutral tones reflecting light from the large floor-to-ceiling windows. Electricity points are located in various places within the false floor space allowing the charging of devices such as laptops, mobile phones and mp3 players, and the use of video recorders and digital projectors.

The open design of the Learning Resource Centre can be seen in this image. Different activity areas can be seen by all users of the library making it an inviting space. The main areas are: the book stacks, the counter area, the Wi-Fi area, the quiet study area, the social area, the computing area and a media workshop area where students from the art and photography areas have specialised kit for mounting work. Short partitions are used in some areas to help with noise reduction. Staff are centrally based and on-hand to assist with student queries.

Media/Craft Room (and speaker outlet)

Main floor color is in. We have made the classic mistake of not realizing how intense each color would look when applied to more than the tiny samples from the paint store. Still, with furniture and (mostly dark) flooring, it should tone down a bit.
I like these little speaker outlets. They use the same keystone format as phone or network receptacles, are fairly low profile, and handle up to 12 gauge wire on both sides.

Looks so much better just being a color. Nice update to a very dated table.

This was taken by my relative, Albert Bumbalo in 1948. My Mother, France Tuzzolino, is primping and posing in front of a beautiful vanity made in the mid 1940s. We had this piece up until the mid eighties when we sold the house. Much of the knurled veneer had torn off here and there. The glass edge leaves were a yellow color and all the glass was beveled. Her real beauty mark, not painted, she told me was the envy of all her friends in the 40s and 50s when in was in vogue. I guess that style has come back a bit. Gosh knows what an entire set like this, a bureau, a tall closet [see them in the mirror! ] and a bed set would go for now in decent shape. Notice the wooden slat venetian blind? I remember we still had them in a rarely used storage room when I was a kid. Comments welcome. See large photo to appreciate Al’s shot of my Mom. I still can remember the musty, ’40 smell of the knurled, wooden lamination. Vanity, vanity, all things are vanity…..

Beautiful shot, rich in detail, and your mom looks gloriously happy.
Oh boy, I love every thing about this picture. First off your mom was a real beauty … and this pose/POV is great! I also love the beautiful vanity, the wallpaper, that cute lamp … this is just fantastic.
I love this too, Whiskeygonebad! It’s truly a beautiful photo.
Again, I must give credit where credit is due: This photo was taken by a swell older relative that passed away when I was in my 20′s in the early 80s, he was in his late 80′s. So he was born right after the turn of the 20th Century.
His name was Al Bumbalo and this is a scan of print made from a 4×5 camera negative. I do not have any of the negatives from this series. Al and I would always bump into each other at weddings and "talk photography". He would have loved Flickr. Since I did not take the picture, I can say that so far this seems to me to be the quintessential "Classic Vanity Photograph" It contains all the elements that one can think of when one thinks of vanity furniture. Ironically, my Mother thought of herself as an gawky, ugly duckling so she hardly had a vane bone in her body. Now she concedes that she was not ugly.
tsk, tsk tsk, typical, timeless teenage angst.
This is the other picture Al took.

We had about 5 persons into photography including my Mom, my dad and Mike Mistretta [Mike took slides and printed them in the 50s, he was my Mom's first cousin - the color pictures of her in her prom dress were taken by Mike]

This is wonderful!
Absolutely gorgeous.
I like the new picture — your mom is still a beautiful woman, and you look great, too!
Everyone, I told my Mother that there were a small group of people who liked the picture of her posing in front of the old vanity. She is still amazed and a bit overwhelmed at the Internet’s far reaching power. Mom reads crazy things about it in the paper, so you can imagine. She asked me if it was possible to actually tell the people "Thank you that’s so nice" I said I can and let it be so if you visit here again and read this. Thanks from both of us, it is so nice of you.
Your mom sounds like such a sweetheart!
My mom and aunt were shocked, too, when I told them that hundreds of people had looked at the photos of them I posted. I’ve since been forbidden from posting the bikini shots of them from the sixties!
That’s sweet
It’s nice of her to share her image with us!
Wow, I just realized something: How did Al take this shot with a flashbulb and two double mirrors with bezeled edges and not get any severe flare. It’s not that one could take 20 shots and just keep checking till you find a sweet spot as we could now with our digital cameras.
Remember: Those bezel edges can play the deuces with light angles.
Could it be he used his eyes to see if any intense light was kicked back towards the camera as he took the picture during every shot? just a thought.
This is just beautiful, indeed the classic vanity shot! I had a vanity a bit like that when I was teenage, passed down from I don’t know where. Can’t believe your mom thought she was an ugly duckling, my! I guess you’re right, that teenage angst thing never changes! I have an aunt, now in her 80s, who has the same feelings your mom does about the internet, just finds it quite amazing and is more than a bit suspicious of it!
Thanks to your mom for letting you share all these beautiful old photos.

I just feel so happy having come across your page. It’s better than a documentary film, very personal and heart felt. The way you state details, they’re just so amazing. You really put your heart into these explanations in all entries.
You’re mom thought she was gawky? ha ha, you’re right about that teen-age angst.
