Of course you can do this. Just take the drawers out of your dresser and nightstand, remove the drawer pulls, sand both pieces and the fronts of the drawers and then prime and paint them both any color you like.

A stitch in time saves nine..Question–: Can you paint furniture that has a fake wood veneer finish?
I have two bedside tables that are probably mdf with fake veneer glued to it to make it appear “wood-like”. Can I spray paint them white without having to worry about it flaking off? How do I prepare them? I can’t sand the veneer ….

The following is the answer: (Hint: The answer is not necessarily.)

Did you mean you can’t sand the veneer or can’t stand the veneer? You will need to remove the shiny surface on the veneer to get paint to stick to it. Sanding is easier and less stressful than using chemical strippers although either will work. Just needs scuffing up.

Check your local how-to store for primers that cover slicker surfaces. There are some good ones out there. Usually it is suggested that you wash the surface with TSP first (found in paint dept.), then sand or scuff the surface. The primer will adhere to the surface allowing the paint to stick to the primer. I have learned the hard way that good preparation makes all the difference in painting. But I know this can be done because I have seen people paint that icky basement panelling that people have that’s a slick veneer. So good luck.

Clean the tables well, removing any impurities that have gathered over time, including polishes or furniture oils. Find a hardware store or big box store that carries a product called XIM UMA Primer. It is made in a spray can. This product is a bonding primer like no other. Spray the tables with this primer, wait 3-4 days for the primer to form a permanent bond, then spray paint it with the desired color. I recommend a Krylon product in a semi-gloss or gloss finish as it will be more durable. Two coats of paint will be more durable than one. Let the paint dry a couple of days before you set anything on it or scoot anything across it. Also, use coasters because most spray paints are not moisture resistant, so condensation from cold or hot drinks will probably leave a ring on the tabletop.
