distressing furniture with paint–: Refinishing black painted furniture…?
Today I picked up 2 high back wooden chairs that are spray painted black. I would like to refinish them with an antique distressed look. How easy will this be to do and where do I start?

sand it. there are small handheld sanders and i would use a sanding attachment on a dremmel tool for getting into the crevices. lowe’s has lots of how-to on paint finishes.

If you want to leave them black but just show worn through places…
sit in the chair, and stand behind it and move it around.. to get an idea where the paint would wear off,….. sand those areas with a foam sanding block until you get the amount of wear you want…
use oil-based polyurethane thinned 50-50 with mineral spirits, wipe this onto the sanded areas with a piece of cloth or paper towel… apply 2-3 times…
most likely worn areas ..middle of the back at top, front edge of seat…

mineral spirits. you can but it at any local hardware store. its a liquid and you just rub it on and the paint comes off.

distressing furniture with paint–: how would you paint a piece of furniture damaged by tape?
i’ve had this banner taped on the headboard of my bed for 3 or 4 years now, and this certain headboard [not wood] has been in my house before i was. I used double sided tape [like i knew any better].
when i tried to remove it a while ago, the strips of tape either took the paint with it or didnt move at all. i put the poster thing back up to hide it but the but i’ll probably have to paint it before my mom sees it..
how could i make it look like this again:

Even if that were paint (and it looks like that plastic laminate “skin” over manufactured wood) fake wood grain is tricky and would have to be blended in over a larger ares than just a couple of tape strips. like the entire headboard. there r books with illustrations and directions for doing this.

i would try washing it off with alcohol to get the old tape off.

Now that I went over you description again, you said you put the poster back up again. I’m assuming you didn’t use any more tape. If you didn’t, then it’s the original tape you used when you first put the poster up three or four years ago.
That tape sure is some strong tape. However, it might be better for you that it’s the original tape.
OK, gently remove the poster off the tape. Now, you are going to have to deal with removing the tape.
I’m thinking cooking oil might loosen the tape. Take a little cooking oil and put some on a rag and tab it on the tape. Make sure there’s enough on the sides of the tape and let it sit for awhile to give it a chance to loosen the tape. You can wipe off any of the oil that might trip down on the headboard.
Now you sit down and pray that this is going to work. Like I said, give the oil enough time so (hopefully) it will come off easily. In the mean time, keep praying for about 10 to 15 minutes. Very gently, test it to see if this whole oil thing is working by taking your thumb nail (hope you have nails) and try to lift the end of the tape. If you can take the rag with the oil on it and slowly try to move up. If you think this will do it, then keep going gently until the tape is removed.
Any left over pieces remaining should be easy enough to remove.
Don’t do anything until you read the rest of the suggestions.
Someone might come up with a better solution to your problem.
Good luck and never do that again. Hope all works out.
