distressing furniture with paint|How to distress a cupboard with paint, sandpaper and wax?
Posted 10 August 2011 by admin Question–: How to distress a cupboard with paint, sandpaper and wax?
I have painted a chest of drawers a Farrow and Ball green colour (I didn’t use primer though?!). How do I make it looked liked a distressed piece of old furniture?

The company I worked with who made distressed furniture while it was in it’s well sanded state would take a dog chain with bolts attached and literally hit it. You can take a hammer and strike it with the edge(corner) of the head and even the claw to cause the same affect on a few items.

Unfortunatly, you should have distressed it before you painted it. But at any rate, I have found the best results by simply beating it with a chain. Not a wire type chain as they tend to scratch too much. Use a piece of medium welded link chain and experiment with it.
Good luck

You can do as the two other people suggested and beat it with hammers, chains and such. I generally just take fine sand paper and distress the places where the cabinet will be touched and handled most, to make it look like it has been well used.
Corners of drawers, around the pulls, top on the corners and edges, You get the picture. Anywhere the cabinet will be handled during its life can be sanded to make it look like its been in use for years. The dents and dings will come in time if you dont want to distress it that much right from the very beginning.

sandpaper will do the trick–start scratching away at paint
or…you can do the Crackle look…..
add a coat of crackle glaze from wallmart (paint dept) let it dry and then add a top coat of paint ..(different color or same color as cupboard) and the finish product will look like old paint cracking and the under color will show thru
( i’m doing this to a piece of furniture as we speak—i sanded down a curio cabinet which was dark oak—put on a moss green flat paint–let it dry-added the crackle glaze–let it dry and then added a black paint on top and right before your eyes–the paint starts to crack–dry and your done hope this helps !

You know were you buy old furniture, paint it up white then distress it a bit.? I am tempted because I have got a bit carried away with buying old stuff and doing it up. My latest acquisition is a full set of Walnut bedroom stuff. I quite like the look you get but having trawled through many websites looking for good examples I have noticed a lot of rubbish painted up and passed off as chic. What’s your opinion on it?
When I say Walnut I am pretty sure it is a Walnut veneer! I am not trying to claim this stuff is solid walnut. It looks lovely though and I am scared that I could mess this up and ruin a great set of furniture by getting carried away with myself.
Haz, Mormon blogs? Excellent! I used to just look at the pics and walk away. I have a whole new interest. Expect me to convert some time next week.

i love shabby chic, but i like more of the stuff that is aged naturally. Why not just leave the set the way it is. let it acquire its dings and knicks and age on its own. i think a whole room full of stuff that has this faux aged look can be a bit much. Use the set the way it is and then acent it with smaller pieces you have already distressed….?
good luck!

I’m a newcomer to Ebay and freecycle (puts the shits up me that with all their rooolz, it’s a bit WI for my tastes) anyhow, loads of stuff is described as ‘shabby chic’ and I don’t think I really understand what it means tbh. Well I understand the shabby bit..
I read a lot of blogs, and for some reason the blogger website is awash with Mormons from Utah, all of whom have 15 kids and seem to have a monopoly on arts and crafts etc. They go on about shabby chic all the time and to me it just looks what I’d call shit DIY. One did a sleigh bed and it looked like she’d given her cat some chalk and let it go mad.
I’d have to say if I had Walnut I’d want to show off the wood and not put owt on it. I saw a lovely wardrobe in one of those YMCA furniture shops the other week – it was I suppose really grannyish, but it had all different wood inlays in the shape of flowers on the doors! I think I’m a wood purist!
I think all these terms bring me out in a sweat and take me right back to school so I panic! I was never any good at lingo much as I tried to know what it all meant. I spent 3 years laughing at some girls swimming cap being called a ‘sponky’ before my best mate told me it meant condom
Shabby chic my @rse……….

I love walnut, don’t know if I would know the difference if it is veneer. i probably mainly see veneer and others maybe do too, so few people might be able to see the difference.
If it looks good and natural wood usually does, then just polish it up (as my granny would have said) and use it as it is. If you change your mind and want to paint it later, it is easier to paint it at a later date, than srtip the paint off at a later date. From someone who was involved with stripping the paint off loads of lovely pine furniture after it had been fashionable to paint it years ago!
