Last Word on Hoffa Hit, July 16, 2004

Enough law enforcement officials have given credit to the veracity of Sheeran's account and it certainly rang true to me as I read it. There are no particularly startling revelations here, at least as regards the Hoffa matter. Those who orchestrated the hit are the same people who were always suspect- Bufalino, Provenzano, etc. However, at the very least, we can now dispense with some of the more fanciful notions that have evolved over the years- Hoffa was buried in a NJ dump, Hoffa rests in the end zone of Giants stadium, etc. I was surprised to read about Sheeran's claiming credit for the Joe Gallo hit in NY in 1972. As a frequent patron of the old Umberto's restaurant on Mulberry Street where the colorful Gallo met his end (you could still see the bullet holes that dispatched Gallo for years afterward and the restaurant became something of a tourist attraction), I always credited the claim of Joseph Luparelli that 3 gunmen were involved in the hit. The only real problem I had with the book was that, despite all his forthcoming self-analysis and revelatory details, I ended the narrative with no real sense beyond the superficial of what made Sheeran tick. Impoverished background? The brutality of his combat experiences? How many people have gone through all that and more without becoming underworld killers? Perhaps it's inevitable that someone like Sheeran is destined to remain an enigma. Or perhaps the prosaic reality is that Frank Sheeran was an essentially shallow, empty man whose only true value in the world in which he moved was the brutality and violence of which he was so obviously capable of performing without much notice or preparation. It would have been interesting to hear from his alienated, embittered daughters to get a glimpse of the man's personality from another vantage point. I did find it interesting and somewhat ironic that Sheeran supposedly made his confessions so that he would be able to be buried in a Catholic cemetery. My father's family has a burial plot in a Catholic cemetery in NJ and not many yards away is the burial plot of Anthony "Tony Pro" Provenzano, a man who allegedly was intimately involved in the Hoffa assassination and yet a man who could claim burial in sanctified ground without having to go through the process of making public confession of his various crimes and sins.

I must say, when I first heard that there was a new book out that supposedly had the inside info on what actually happened to Jimmy Hoffa, I was skeptical. After all... after years of myths and mysterious tales that included the Teamster boss' burial beneath the Giant Stadium End Zone, I figured this would be more of the same... speculative journalism. Was I wrong! This book has more than the ring of truth, it has the look, feel and smell of truth. Frank Sheeran's story, as reported and commented on by the author, is clearly authentic. The way the story unfolds -- as first person narration with commentary -- provides the reader with an in-depth journey through a life of crime, murder, mob relationships, and betrayal on a grand scale. It's not only solid history and a superb biography of a complex individual, it's one of the best non-fiction crime books I've ever read. And the big questions... who killed James R. Hoffa... why and how did it go down? I'm convinced they are answered. Case closed. And the insights the book gives us into a life in crime are fascinating. Go for it!

Charles Brandt has proved twice over the last twenty years that he is a pretty good author. This non-fiction work (the title refers to the code Mafiosi used to inquire whether someone did hits -- the blood spatter being the paint) detailing the life of Frank Sheeran and his buddy Jimmy Hoffa is first rate.

Brandt combines passages of Sheeran's own words with the author's background and fill-in's to tie together an impressive mob memoir. Frank Sheeran, besides hailing for a time from my own Wilmington, Delaware, was one vicious and disciplined mobster. This is his story. His hardscrabble life (his father would make him fight people in bars as a teen for beer -- the beer going to his father, not Frank) perhaps made a life a amorality unsurprising. What is amazing is that this recount by an old man facing death is not a repentance for a life lived horribly wrong, but a simple detailing of the events of that life. The banality of Sheeran describing his career -- hits, butchering, beatings told the way an accountant would detail audits or financial statement presentations -- is fascinating and speaks to a man wholly absorbed in doing his part for organized crime and the Teamsters.

Hoffa is presented as an interesting figure; one who starts using the mob for the benefit of "his" teamsters but makes the tragic mistake of believing he is too big to be bound by mob rules. His story and will to take over what was once the most powerful union in America is a remarkable tale in its own right and told interestingly in this book.

Sheeran idolizes Hoffa. Then he kills him (according to Sheeran). The punch of this book is a detailed and blow-by-blow telling of Hoffa's supposed meeting with his executioner (the mob supposedly sends someone you would never expect when it is decided you've pushed their patience too far) and the deed. Sheeran is detailed and convincing in his telling. Sheeran also hints that Hoffa and certain mob bosses were behind the JFK assassination as a payback for Bobby Kennedy's war against organized crime as a Senate attorney and later Attorney General. In fact, Sheeran thinks he may have delivered a package that was Lee Harvey Oswald's rifle to a contact in Baltimore days before the shooting of the president.

Whether or not this is the true story of what happened to Jimmy Hoffa (and whether or not he was involved in JFK's assassination) will have to be for each reader to judge. But the story is one heck of an interesting ride into the sordid doings of organized crime. Mr. Brandt, you should pick up the pen more frequently.

Growing up I owned several pairs of white Keds and to keep them clean, my dad sprayed them with scotchgard. His pet peeve is dirty shoes and now (shockingly!) it's mine as well. So when I recently bought a couple pairs of TOMS shoes in a lighter color, I immediately needed to spray them with Scotchgard to protect them from stains, just like my dad.

Application and smell was exactly as I remembered, they dried fast, and did not affect the colored fabric of the shoes. The Scotchgard does exactly as advertised, I got them a little wet and the water beaded-up on the shoes - fantastic!

Evidently I am not the best walker because my heels always have scuff marks on them (I assume from scuffing on each other) and with the Scotchgard protected shoes, they are easily wiped clean.

Scotchgard is a trusted name to protect belongings and continues to work as advertised. I am back to order more, so that I can Scotchgard everything in my life (my poor husband!)

Highly recommended!

Excellent fabric protection for new furniture, cheaper (and quality more controllable) than having manufacturer put it on. Only concern might be chemicals for those with multiple chemical sensitivity. Also, wish it were just a little cheaper. I used 2 whole cans to cover one reclining rocker (can says one can will cover two chairs). I didn't overspray either, just light coverage back and forth at the appropriate distance. When that dried, I did apply another light coat, as recommended, rather than one thick spray coat.

Before I got this earring stand, I had to sift through my earring box, looking for the ones I wanted to wear, and their mates. Now they are all visible at once. Having them all hanging in plain sight has made it easy for me to keep them organized, too. I can keep similar pairs together in the same row. When I take them off, it's just as easy to hang them back up as toss them on the dresser. I had so many earrings that I filled the whole rack up as soon as I got it. The only thing that keeps me from giving it five stars is that it looks like the display in a store. It's just not very attractive. But I'd never go back to rooting through the box I used to keep them in.

I was thrilled when this came in the mail! I have been late to work before trying to find a match for an earring in what used to be my disorganized cluster of earrings in a box. And I also would forget that I even owned certain pairs of earrings. It was so much fun to dump them all out onto a table and arrange them onto this product. I think the organizer works very well for all kinds of earrings for pierced ears, regardless of the type of hook or clasp. (I do not own any clip earrings so I am unable to give feedback on how it would work with those.) The organizer folds together upright to save space without crushing any earrings. It is light weight yet sturdy enough to hold lots of earrings without toppling over. When it folds out, you can see every pair of earrings you own! Although the organizer itself is attractive, it is colorless so that your eye is drawn to your earrings rather than the product. My husband was very impressed with the clever design and commented on how pretty it looks on my dresser. I told him this was the best 20 bucks (price I paid with shipping) I had spent on something for myself in a while! I highly recommend this product.

Caps Crack and Product Dries Up, December 7, 2011

I've changed my rating from 1 star to 3. The product caps do crack and the product does dry out as described in my original review. However, I tried the recommendation made by Amaco and added a few drops of turpentine to some dried-out product, and it seems that it does reconstitute. I cut the tubes open with a knife, and dug out a small amount of the dried product, added a drop or two of turpentine, and blended it with small palette knife on a piece of plate-glass. I don't plan to reconstitute an entire tube-full, but just what I need before a job. I'll keep the opened tubes in separate zip-lock bags so the colors don't mix.

This review applies to all colors of rub n buff. I repair antique and vintage items**, such as picture frames, and use several products to help restore faded and damaged finishes. I find Rub n Buff to be an easy to use product when highlighting an area or providing some "depth" to frames that have been painted. In terms of usefulness, I would give this product 3 stars...HOWEVER, I am giving it one star because without exception, the shelf life of these tubes is very poor once opened. The problem is that (1) the caps CRACK or SPLIT once the tube is open (and recapped) and (2) the product then dries out. Of the 10 or so tubes I have, 7 have this problem and have to be thrown out--even though I might have used the product only one time some months ago. The 3 tubes that don't have this problem (yet) are unopened! I've tried sealing the tubes in air-tight plastic bags, sealing the tube openings with plastic wrap (using rubber bands and/or tape to create an air-tight seal ... but the tubes always dry out. I did not over-tighten the caps.

I contacted the Amaco and sent them pictures, but they wanted me to send the bad tubes to them, and then they would determine whether they are more than 2 years old ... if so, they presumably would not replace them. The problem has nothing to do with the products being 2 years old or not ... there is a problem with cracking caps. For all I know the tubes were hanging at the retailers for two years before I even purchased them. I have all sorts of polishes, adhesives, stains, finishes, lubrication, etc. -- many over 2 years old, and none of these products exhibit this cracking cap problem.

I wish there were a way to attach some photos to this review, but I don't think there's a way. I would share with you the pictures that I sent Amaco.

** I wouldn't use this product on a true antique or valuable item...there are better ways to make small repairs. (E.g., mixing a small amount of "bronzing powder" with shellac, varnish, etc.) You may need to do a Google search to find these powders since they are used for furniture refinishing / repairs.

Since posting this I received an email from Amaco saying that taking the dried out rub n buff and adding a few drops of turpentine will reconstitute it. Keep the mixture in a tightly closed jar. I will try that ... before throwing away the 7 tubes.

I purchased this item due to a high priced designer recommending it to change my silver wood frames to gold. I was hesitant since I paid several hundred dollars for the frames but my only other alternative was to replace the entire frame at a frame shop at several hundred dollars more. So, with little instruction from the designer, I went to work. At my surprise, it was super simple, looks fantastic and definitely a professional appearance. My only recommendation is to wear gloves, preferrably surgical and apply the thick buff to a board, spread somewhat evenly on a cloth before applying. In other words, it comes out in a thick log, similar to toothpaste. If you apply it that way, it spreads on heavy which is not always the best way to apply. Start with a small amount for a less clumpy look. Tube is small but goes a loooonnngg way...one tube covered two frames 4' x 4' with 1/2 a tube left over.
