Dr. Drew helps us buy paint

We ran into Loveline’s Dr. Drew at a hardware store in Pasadena while buying supplies for our "Road to Oprah" bus. Dr. Drew joined our producers on the spot, chipping in that we used right away to help buy some paint! Here is his producer profile:

a happy surprise

i took this this morning from my front porch, and i was unhappy with the image. it was dark, overexposed, and blah. but i decided to play with it, i mean why not, right? so i played with the levels, took out the color, darkened the highlights, lightened the shadows, and took out the blue.
and then — whoops, there it is! i know it’s grainy as all get-out, but sometimes i loves me a good grain, you know?
i swear, playing in PS Elements really does feel like painting sometimes. which is kinda neat, cos i’m off now to go to the art store with gwynydd to buy some actual paint. wheee!

I’m going to be a dad any day now. I recently packed up my home office and rented a place nearby to write and blog from, unpacking all my junk from several moves and storage lockers and closets (which felt great). Then I diligently applied myself and caught up on all my writing projects, giving myself a couple months’ runway before I have to do anything major.
So…I’m kinda done! I’ve caught up for the first time in several years. I don’t have any planes to catch. The baby’s room is painted. We’ve picked out a name for her (Poesy Emmeline Fibonacci Nautilus Taylor Doctorow).
All that’s left to do is wait.
And paint D&D miniatures.
Lessons learned from my first D&D miniature painting project in two decades:
* Remember the primary colours when you buy paints. Blue and yellow are primary colours! You need those!
* Buy more brushes than you think you’ll need — dry-brushing is hard on them
* No, not that many brushes. Stupid.
* Don’t drop your miniatures and step on them halfway through.
* Prime in black, not white, for superior horrific monstrousness
* Glue the minis to pieces of cardboard first
* More light is more better
* I need to visit the optometrist. At 36, I’m losing my close-in vision
* It’s harder than it looks
* It’s more fun than it looks
* Making stuff that’s tangible kicks fuckloads of ass

I am painting my honda civic a darker silver. How much paint will it take to repaint all of it? And how much should I expect to be paying for the G35 dark silver paint? Unsure of the exact paint code at this moment. Wheres a good site to look up paint codes? Any suggestions best places to buy paint? Internet or local? Thanks
I have experience spraying clearcoats and primers and do plenty of hands on work. Not concerned about the spraying, just the questions I asked above. Thanks.
The following is the answer: (Hint: The correct answer provided by the users, does not guarantee the right.)
Answer by gary o
buy local in case you need tech help. Should take about a quart, but can verify when you go to buy the paint. Also buy quality paint as the work is in the preparation.
Answer by James M
If you dont know the answer to that…dont paint your own car!
Trust me…Ive painted garden fences and mona lisa’s ..and then I painted my Bmw..Needless to say, it came out pretty bad…(there were just so many areas where it went rong…) and the amount of money I spent on the paint for my car and then gettin it done by a pro was way too much.
Im pretty sure you will go do it anyway because your skills maybe better than mine but I’ve studied art for god sakes! (i no..gay subject)… I thought my painting skills would be at a very high standard…nope
****
oh then my guess is going to be at least 3qts…i suggest you go down to halfords and check out the paints they have there. Its much easier because I went through this online and there isnt really any good sites…

Painted at a project my friend Louise has volunteered at – Cambodian Children’s Painting Project – www.letuscreatecambodia.org/ – she volunteered for a couple of months and had the time of her life. They arrange exhibitions around the world where the paintings are sold to raise further funds. They had one in London today and it was a great event with art for sale, films being shown etc.

haha! neat.
How can i establish friendship relation with Dr. drew ?Or who can help me locating Dr. Abdul Rehman Zameer (heart surgion) living in pasadena since 1980.?
I can’t wait to see this scene covered in snow. You live in such a beautiful place. Each season is going to bring numerous photo ops and I am living through you for each one …
Since I’ve seen the summer there, I might just have to make a trip for the other three seasons as well. Do you have any other kitchen utensils that I can break?
Grain is good for shots like this. I maybe would’ve desaturated the whole thing but that’s just me. have a great day!
Always glad to see more Elements users out there.
I like the sky. Gives it a great early-fall feel.
Me likes it! I’m dying to visit this place. I mean this is the view out your front door? I’ve only been up the Hudson Valley once, but man, I think you all take your surroundings for granted a little. There’s soooo much character just waiting to be devoured!!!!
can’t wait to see your painting
Great stuff.
hey, great result, well done!

Great spooky atmosphere !
i love this tone, treatment, whatever they call it….beautiful!!! ; )
It’s all you, and it’s wonderful!
I dont no about all the ps stuff but its a nice shot!! and a nice view from your porch!!
awwww, i’m so glad you like this one. thanks, guys!!
@beebo: i have a wooden spoon with your name on it.
@j. star: thanks! i am in awe of how you do those PSE skies. i think of them as j-star-skies, actually. just like brooding telephone-wire-skies are tearapen skies, blue puffy-cloud skies are j-star skies.
@joe: yup, that be’s the view. and the guest room is on standby, waiting for you.
@torbakhopper: here you go! not sure what i think if it, but i have to say, it felt really good doing it. so very liberating. i knew i was hooked when at one point, without thinking, i put down the paintbrush and started using my finger to blend colors.
Nice work with the sepia tones..

@beebo: i have a wooden spoon with your name on it.
but … but … but … you’re married …
get it. got it. good. thx. please do continue trying more sepia and yer b&w’s have been gorgeous. this strikes my green chord.
I always love when you post photos of this building. I spent so much of my childhood to the left of the frame, just about where the little kiosk is located. My best friend Dave lived in the apartment building that used to be here. It burned down in 1995 or ’96.
We used play football on the street, kick the ball over the fence and try to sneek around Richard’s building without him seeing us…he was grouchy!
In fact back in the late 80′s, sometime before they paved over the parking lot behind the aprtments, me and about five other children planted a time capsule in the middle of the lot then watched as they sealed it over with blacktop. After the fire I went down to watch them demolish the building, hoping to see the capsule unearthed. Instead, I watched as they heaped the earth down into the hole of the foundation, reburying the capsule.
Maybe in fifty years someone will find it, pry open the PVC tube and be treated to a flood of Don Mattingly baseball cards, bazooka gum and the such.
Anyway this is what i am always reminded of…thank you.
Oh wow – that takes me back.
But first – congrats on soon-being a Dad! Huzzahs for one and all!
Anyway, yeah, while digging around at my parents’ home last summer I discovered this guy from my miniature-painting days:
I remember my main conclusions back in the day being:
* Red just can’t get dark enough, can it? The darker and earthier the better.
* Metal details on your model? Try painting them as bone instead – instant awesomeness!
The fact that since recovering him my sister has taken him on sightseeing trips makes the fella no less evil in my book…
He’s amazing, Daveybot!
nice! it’s weird, but recently i’ve been getting into miniature figures again, although these time from a observers standpoint rather than an active participant (its time consuming!)
i’ve been really impressed by the folks who go on to sculpt their own figures: coolminiornot.com/10362
It looks good on the mysterious tomes. I painted my first one since about 1990 a few months ago and, just like in 1990, I sprayed so much sealer on it that it looked like shiny plastic. Also:
* Caffeine and mini painting do not mix! SHAKE SHAKE SHAKE
Hi, I’m an admin for a group called D&D, and we’d love to have your photo added to the group.
Splendid. Didn’t know you had a hidden D&D past!
Congratz on the birth-to-be, Sir, and enjoy that Lincolnstein print.
for very fine brushes, i used to take a bit of my hair, sometimes a single hair or two, and drip that into the paint. they were water-based, so i knew they’d come off in the shower. i suppose that’s not an option for you, but you could sneak up behind alice and nab a hair while she’s distracted.
i wonder if miniatures is some strange form of nesting for you. i kept telling people i hadn’t nested at all, then realized i’d completely redone my website and cleaned up my server.
also, tangible: oh yeah. that’s why you have all those bowls.
Excellent for you.
it looks good, I might have to try that someday.
Power to the Players!
I predict a re-uptake of D&D now that many of us are in our mid to late 30′s.
Hi Corey! Congrats on your becoming-a-dad news! It’s quite often that I think to myself: "I wish Corey was my dad."
I have an army of D&D miniatures…. brings back good memories… I went for Testors oil paints, but this looks like acrylic, yes?
Children remind us of how to be creative, and they foster an existential appreciation of the present. Our perception of the passage of time clocks with salient events. The sheer activity level of children and their rapid transformation accelerates the metronome of life.
Which reminds me, I have a book recommendation for the soon-to-be GeekDad: Gopnik’s Scientist in the Crib. I got an idea from it that worked a few hours after birth. The newborn’s vision system is working on edge detection. I found an overhead light strip at the hospital that made a sharp edge, and it was bright enough to see through closed eyelids. Whenever we rolled the bassinet underneath, bam, his eyes would open. This was very helpful for visiting family and friends who wanted to see more than a sleeping baby.
It was a bit in conflict with the longer term cardinal rule: never wake a sleeping baby. =)
Pesco got us a copy of SCIENTIST and we read it to each other while on the road in China in the fall — it was really interesting!
Lookin’ good, Cory. No doubt your organic homuncula will turn out at least as well-crafted. Don’t let the kid play with it, though. At least not until she rolls a 20 in dexterity.
BTW, "Fibonacci Nautilus"? Oh, aren’t you precious.
That is awesomely geeky of you.

Seen on your photo stream. (?)
George Oates was just lamenting to me yesterday that our GM got too busy and we need to find a new one so we can play again.
(Congrats on approaching parenthood!)
that’s it, get it out of your system…. =D
I’m glad you’re no longer painting on the carpet in the den!!
Destructor — that’s awfully kind of you!
My sister bought me this ‘Lord of the Rings Mines of Moria’ game, and I painted about 20 orcs before I couldn’t stand it any longer. I have a nagging feeling that I should finish.
"kicks fuckloads of ass" that’s totally GETS. I’m using it from now on.
Great!

Ook deze is zo mooi ! Er vriendelijk kijkt ze niet .
Beautiful series !!!
