I don’t want to be someone that anyone settles for.– Sleepless in Seattle A friend is easier lost than found.”Work fascinates me.” I can look at it for hours! ” .Question–: Should I paint antique furniture?
I’ve had my bedroom set since I was born (I’m 27 now) and my parents bought it as antiques. My children now use the bedroom set in their rooms (2 twin beds, a dresser with mirror and a tall dresser). They are all in really good condition and they look awesome in my son’s room because his room is vintage nautical themed, but my daughter’s room is bright and cheery and they just don’t fit. Would it be a mistake to paint her furniture? I’ve wanted to since I was little, but my parents would never allow it because they love antiques. Even now, they feel I would be making a mistake by painting it. Thoughts anyone? I know nothing about antiques…

Yes, you will destroy the value of the furniture by painting. If however you are going to keep it then you should make it fit your lifestyle. I’d suggest that you just very lightly sand the finish to get it dull and then apply a latex primer before the paint. Using this method will make it easier for someone to remove the paint in the future and reapply a clear finish without disturbing the stain. Tell your parents that this method will make it possible for your children to return the furniture back to original after they’ve discovered what an idiotic thing you’ve done.

There are antiques and there are antiques. Some are very valuable and some are not, and a great deal of the value of some of them comes from their being in totally original condition. If you change that original condition, you lose some of the value. You might want to find out exactly what you have, what it’s worth, and if and by how much the value would change if refinishing was done. Then you can make an intelligent choice about how to treat this furniture.

There are antiques, and then there is just old.

You make no mistake if you want to paint it. The only mistake you could possibly make is to find out, after, it was valuable and you ruined its value.

Your money, your furniture, your choice.
