antiquing furniture with paint–: Paint color for a room with weird colored furniture?
I have no clue what to paint my room. My furniture is a little strange.
Here it is basically:
-antique desk painted sea foam green with white trim and knobs
-a silvery light lavender velvet vintage chair
-light walnut colored (wood) dresser and antique nightstand that’s close to the same color
-White metal day bed
-Black velvet curtains and matching pillows
-black mirror (it’s a flat black rather than shiny)
-Black and White damask bedding
-hot pink rose hook on the wall
-cherry red mahogany record player (brand new but made to look like a vintage radio)
-red velvet accents (pillows and box)
-the carpet is greyish but with a purple tint like the chair
-I’m painting plain white picture frames a shiny golden color and putting them on a blank wall
-Cream colored lampshade
- a few leopard print accents

Yeah, it’s strange I know, but I don’t plain on being to matchy matchy or anything. I just want a color that will make it look complete because now it just looks like I have a room full of stuff. Any ideas?

A medium shade of Mocha would look very nice.

I would definitely choose a neutral color. There are some REALLY cool shades of gray to choose from. You could choose a cool gray or maybe a beige with a slight green tint. I think your room sounds pretty cool! I wish you had some pics of it on here…

Answer by Herbie
Very pale lavender would look great. It would echo the chair and contrast beautifully with the desk. But if you should decide to go for grey be very careful about the shade as grey walls can look rather gloomy and depressing, as I found out after it was too late! But with the other things you have I would definitely leave out the leopardskin.

Well i think your sea green is the color like this

If it is then i think the walls would look good. Or you could do a damask wall and then paint the others a green or white

Sounds perfectly Deco to me I would go silver on the picture frames you’re painting. Then do the walls in a deep purple darker up the chart then the rug and chair and reddish and metallic silver mottling. Also do the bed in a cream or black. nttp://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2009/01/21/article-1125742-0321520D000005DC-333_634x670.jpg

I’d go with the pale lavender, sounds just right

Sounds like you have put together a very nice and interesting ecclectic collection.
With the colors you mentioned, I think I would paint the walls a pale light lavender.
You may even be able to find a silvery looking lavender.

Or a very light gray that leans toward lavender.

Bring lots of paint charts home in the color possibilities and look at them in your room.

Your room seems like its really vintage. Stay away from dark colors because it will darken everything and look ugly. You could paint the walls white and it would look fine or even light cucumber green or light yellow. It would look cool if you could put beadboard on the walls and paint that white but that might be a little expensive and hard if you don’t have the tools.

Let your collection be the star of the room! A bold paint color will dominate and your treasures will end up looking like trash. It may seem boring but I think white will work really good as a background for your eclectic mix of goodies. If the room is large and hard to “fill up” use black paint for details. Like stripes or stencil some designs in random empty places. Maybe a black border around window and door frames. Black boxes painted behind your picture frames.

I would choose a very, very pale grey-green color. make sure it is not “muddy,” but a clear tone. A silvery grey, but not metallic. The green should be so very subtle it doesn’t jump out at you. I would chose this color to cool down the strong colors (blacks, red) in the room. I think it would look more sophisticated than a neutral (tan family) or a lavender and serve as a backdrop for the mix of colors and accent pieces. As for the picture frames, I’d do a brushed silver instead of gold. In with the frames, I’d mix a couple of art deco look mirrors in silver. I’m not sure I would use the leopard accents. I’d lose the hot pink rose hook, too. Seems like you’ve got a lot going on in the room with the different colors and pieces. I don’t think you need any more texture, personally.

antiquing furniture with paint

I have a tall metal table with stools that I am trying to refinish. The original finish was black metal with sort of a silver antique-type finish with gold-painted accents. I bought a rustoleum spray-paint antiquing kit and followed instructions (the base color is copper, with a black antique finish that gets rubbed over). I washed the furniture and spray-painted it, have not yet put on the glaze.

The thing is, the copper base coat seems to scratch off VERY easily–with a fingernail. I don’t have enough of the copper base paint to re-do the whole set. Is there anything I can do once the whole thing is done that would protect it from scratching so easily? A laquer or something? Any ideas?
The black part (which is most of the table) SEEMS to be the actual color of the metal, rather than a paint. The reason I’m refinishing it is that the silver antiquing had worn off in spots on the top. The gold that was on there was definitely painted. Would sanding work if the surface wasn’t painted?

Lexie,

without knowing more about the the metal table, I would guess that it had some kind of a sealant on it. Rather than wash the metal, you probably should have sanded it with a medium sanding grit. The paint should not be so easy to remove. If you were to cover the new base with a sealant, you’d probably mess up the application of theantiquingg finish the is to be rubbed over. I would suggest you try sanding down the table and then apply a primer coat, intended especially for metal in an outdoor environment. Then you could probably get away with obtaining a copper spray paint (again, intended for outdoor metal) and re-paint the metal table. Then apply the rubbed on finish according to directions. I think it would be ok to use any type of copper metal paint as you base coat—not necessarily that type that came with your kit.

good luck

Answer by Rob G
Don’t use a lacquer for the topcoat it may dissolve you base coats. Your base coats are probably enamel based. Use a polyurethane, that will give good weather protection and not harm your base finishes

Ok! Let me get this straight: Your room is sea foam green, light lavender, walnut, white, black, hot pink, cherry red mahogany, red, grayish with a purple tint, creme and leopard print? Did I forget anything? No yellow? No Orange? Whats wrong with you?!

Frankly my dear, and no offense, I would get some serious help for you, and soon. But obviously since you like your color and want these things to be seen, I wouldn’t do a color on the wall. I would use the wall as a canvas for your, your……..schizoid tastes? In other words do an off white to white color to highlight your accessories. (white dove by Benjamin Moore) And yes, I am just having a little fun with you but it IS a bit too busy sounding.

Pastel green or lavender would work well.OR pastel yellow or pale pink would be fine too.=)

  3. I might assist if I feel like it says:

Your biggest items is what sets the room tone.(And that would be the floor color and ceiling.. If the ceiling is the same color as the wall, change that idea because it shrinks the room. That is why “white” has been up there all these years. It is a neutral color and is “light” not “overbearing” Bedding and curtains can always be changed to fit the room. After that everything is accents – either it “fits the decor” or it “stands out”.
Walls are generally something you don’t wanna touch because it is such a big job. Carpet generally stays too(especially if it is a wall to wall carpet. Again another big cost and covers a big area.
So, the ceiling I would go with white.. Use a brand name ceiling paint and paint the ceiling white.
Now, I don’t care about the crap in the room. It comes and it goes. The carpet color is grey and purple. Then I would consider a pastel grey on the walls because it is a neutral color like the white ceiling and most any color fits with grey. Purple = not so many.
While this all sounds bland and ordinary, it is your stuff that makes it extraordinary, right?

Besides, painting it purple would be like being inside MacDonalds 24/7 (which would drive you batty)
