If it’s a vaulable piece of antique I would seek the advice of a professional. You don’t want to destroy the value buy trying some off the wall remedy.

Agree w/ little eagle.
Milk paint is an immediate clue to a pieces age
Most frequently found on primitive “farm” pieces & worth checking out.
Had a shop & did repairs for a number of antique shops.
If a piece was in really bad shape & stripping was the only way out, the stuff was a bear to remove & not damage the piece further.
Solvent type commercial strippers did not work since the stuff is organic & the solvents barely touched it.
The hot caustic bath after the chemical stripper was used worked ( not well),but that could have just been from the wood soaking up water.
If you really want to try it yourself you could make a paste of caustic soda & water but that is nasty stuff & requires neutralizing w/ a mild acid solution.
Mex is a caustic cleaner you can get in hardware stores.
One of the newer heavy paste strippers that you wrap w/ plastic film might work & is safer .
In any event, dont try to sand the stuff off.
I used cabinet scrapers which let you “shave” rather than dig in.
If you have it checked out I still want to go ahead, might as well DIY since it will give the “pro’s ” fits & may cause damage.
Best regards
